The story of a family passion for the vine

Gérard Bertrand wines are, above all, a family story.

Three generations of winegrowers, from Paule to Georges, then Gérard Bertrand.

In 1920, Paule Bertrand planted the family's first vines in the Corbières. Carignan vines that are now proud centenarians.

In 1975, Georges Bertrand introduced his son Gérard, then aged ten, to the harvest at Château de Villemajou, in the Corbières. Georges Bertrand played a pioneering role in revealing the terroirs of the Languedoc and worked towards the recognition of the Boutenac cru.

Gérard Bertrand has shared his passion for winemaking and his convictions, as well as the pioneering spirit of his father, for more than 30 years.

A fourth generation is in the making. Gérard Bertrand's rare talent as a blender is shared with his team. A unique savoir-faire, passed on and nurtured with his wife Ingrid, and his two children, Emma and Mathias.

Biodynamics

The practice of biodynamics

Gérard Bertrand and his teams are convinced that viticulture in harmony with nature is the best path to bringing terroir wines to the highest level of excellence. This farming method makes it possible to produce wines that are representative of all the nuances of the terroirs of the South of France.

Biodynamic farming is akin to homoeopathy for the vine. It consists of using compost and biodynamic plant herbal teas. Biodynamics takes into account all the natural elements surrounding the vine and is based on cosmic rhythms.

The conversion of the estates to biodynamic farming began in 2002 at Domaine de Cigalus. Today, all the vineyards are cultivated biodynamically in compliance with the DEMETER specifications. By 2023, all of the vineyards will have completed their conversion to certification, for the benefit of nature, the winemaking teams and wine consumers

The values of the Gérard Bertrand group

Excellence, Innovation, Naturalness and Conviviality

Gérard Bertrand has created, on each of his estates, exceptional wines from unique plots, chosen from among the finest terroirs of the Languedoc. These plots, selected for their exceptional ampelographic and climatic situation, stand as grands crus of the South of France, the quintessence of the Languedoc terroir.

Innovation is a key word for the Gérard Bertrand group. It is essential to listen to consumers in order to meet their needs and each of their consumption moments. Gérard Bertrand wines offer new experiences and occasions to elevate the collective adventures of enthusiasts. Innovation also comes through innovative packaging, such as the Cote des Roses range, among others, which combines high-level design creativity and excellence of content.

Occitania is the largest organic vineyard in France, representing alone 36% of the French organic vineyard and 7% of the world organic vineyard. It brings together all the assets favourable to organic viticulture. The geographical exposure, the Mediterranean climate (warm and windy) and the vast variety of resistant grape varieties make it easy to fight against parasitic presences in the vines. A pioneer of biodynamics in his vineyards, Gérard Bertrand wishes to support winegrowers who are committed to preserving the environment and to inspire the drive towards organic farming.

The ambition of Gérard Bertrand and his teams is to celebrate the Art de Vivre and to forge a link between the great estate wines, gastronomy, art and lovers of beautiful encounters. Château l'Hospitalet, situated in the heart of the protected Clape massif, perfectly reflects the Mediterranean Art de Vivre. A biodynamically farmed wine estate, Château l'Hospitalet is also a leading destination for wine tourism in the Mediterranean.
