Disposable NF 0.5G chemical breathalyser without a balloon

What is it for?

The breathalyser is not designed to measure the precise alcohol concentration in breath and, by extension, in the blood. Its purpose is to allow the police or individuals to check whether someone is fit to drive.

If the test is positive, the police will use an evidential breath analyser to measure the precise alcohol level.

Not to be confused with an evidential breath analyser

The evidential breath analyser is the only legally recognised instrument for precisely measuring alcohol concentration in breath for legal proceedings. Used by the police, it must be reliable and accurate, comply with AFNOR standard NF X 20 701 and be checked once a year for the test to be valid.

The two types of breathalyser

There are two types of breathalyser. The chemical breathalyser is the type with a balloon and can only be used once.

Electronic breathalysers come in two classes.

Class 1: highly reliable, accurate and expensive.
Class 2: more common and as reliable as a chemical breathalyser.

Is it mandatory to carry a breathalyser in your vehicle?

This device was made mandatory in all motor vehicles by a decree published in the Official Journal on Thursday 1 March 2012. However, not having one is not penalised under another decree published in the Official Journal on Friday 1 March 2013. It is nevertheless advisable to keep at least one in the vehicle.

Self-testing and alcohol ignition interlock systems

Road safety authorities consider chemical or electronic breathalysers an excellent way to check whether you are fit to drive.

In addition, establishments open at night and authorised to serve alcohol between 2 am and 7 am are now required to provide NF-certified breathalysers. Since 1 July 2015, the blood alcohol limit has been 0.2 g/L for newly qualified drivers during their probationary period and less than 0.5 g/L for experienced drivers.

How chemical breathalysers work

Chemical breathalysers work using reagents that react to alcohol in exhaled breath. After checking the expiry date, two years from the date of manufacture, simply blow into the balloon or directly into the tube. Once the balloon is inflated or the white indicator becomes visible, break the sealed ends of the test tube or press them, depending on the kit used.

Before using a disposable breathalyser , it is worth knowing that one additional alcoholic drink raises blood alcohol concentration by around 0.25 g/L. However, the rate at which the body absorbs alcohol varies according to physical factors. Blood alcohol concentration continues to rise for around 60 minutes after the last drink.

Contrary to popular belief, the effects of alcohol often have not fully worn off: having a breathalyser can help prevent a tragedy.

Why this regulation?

The permitted blood alcohol level was deliberately lowered for newly qualified drivers following the measure of 1 July 2015: they are the leading cause of death and disability among 18–25-year-olds, and alcohol levels are excessive in a quarter of collisions.

What are the delivery times and costs?

Although all orders are dispatched within 24 hours, this may take up to 48 hours in some cases.

Standard delivery is free in France from €125 and in other countries from €300 worth of orders.
