Château l'Hospitalet

AOP La Clape

La Clape has preserved its limestone soils from its Pyrenean heritage. L'Hospitalet enjoys one of the sunniest climates in France, and the sun's rays give the wines a uniquely luminous balance. Biodynamic viticulture allows the full expression of this resonance between the environment and the terroir, between the richness of the fruit and the tension of the structure. The wines have a freshness and salinity characteristic of limestone terroirs.
The Grand Vin Blanc is a unique blend of the local and emblematic La Clape grape variety, Bourboulenc, a historic variety native to the Massif de la Clape, with Grenache Blanc, Viognier and Vermentino.
Part of the wine is aged in barrels (70%) and the rest in vats to preserve freshness.
The red Grand Vin is a blend of the best plots of Syrah, Mourvèdre and Grenache Noir. Each is vinified separately, and the blend is made in February. The wine is then aged in barrels for twelve months. Bottling takes place
on a fruit day of the lunar calendar to respect the rhythms of biodynamic viticulture. The terroir of marl and hard limestone gives both white and red wines a freshness and a salivating mouthfeel that indicate a very interesting ageing potential.

Château l'Hospitalet is nestled in the heart of the protected La Clape massif, an ancient link in the
of the Pyrenean chain, a Phoenician and then Roman island, and the cradle of the vine in France.
As early as the 13th century, the Hospices de Narbonne settled on La Clape, which was joined to the mainland
by the alluvial deposits of the Aude river since the late Middle Ages. Documents dating from 1561 attest to its mission of welcoming and sharing with pilgrims.
This vocation of hospitality inspired Gérard Bertrand to make l'Hospitalet the beating heart
of his Mediterranean art of living, since he acquired the property in 2002.
Today, the Château boasts a 5-star hotel, a gourmet restaurant, a
tasting and sales cellar, an Espace d'Art and a rich offering of sensory wine trails. What was missing was music: in 2004, the château hosted the first "Jazz à l'Hospitalet" festival, now an international benchmark.

Who is Gérard Bertrand?

A committed winemaker and ambassador for the great terroirs of the South of France, Gérard Bertrand embodies excellence and innovation in the world of wine. Heir to a line of winegrowers, he began harvesting at Château de Villemajou and forged a unique vision, combining respect for tradition with a quest for modernity.

A former rugby player, he transposes to his estates the values of performance and surpassing oneself acquired on the pitch. A pioneer of biodynamic viticulture, he has established himself as a leader in sustainable wine, highlighting exceptional terroirs through viticulture that respects nature and the cycles of life. Today, at the head of several emblematic estates, he works to promote the Mediterranean art of living and the uniqueness of Languedoc wines worldwide.
