Orange wine, past and present

What is organic orange wine?

Organic orange wine

The orange wine, also known as vin ambré, has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity among winemakers and oenophiles in recent years. Stemming from a cultural tradition dating back thousands of years, it first appeared around 8,000 years ago in the Caucasus, in what is now Georgia, considered the cradle of viticulture. In those days, wine was macerated in large earthenware jars called kvevris which were used to vinify, age and store wines. The old-fashioned Georgian method of vinification in traditional kvevris has been recognized since 2013 at as part of humanity's intangible cultural heritage. This makes orange wineone of the oldest wines in the world !

Unlike white wine, orange wine vinification involves preserving the grape skins, seeds and stalks , which give it its distinctive color and tannic structure. The length of maceration, ranging from several days to several months, plays an essential role in influencing not only color, but also taste. Today, orange wine is matured in a variety of containers, including stainless steel vats, barrels and, traditionally, earthenware jars. In other words, vin orange is a white wine vinified like a red wine. Made from white grape varieties, vin orange (a name coined by an English importer in 2004) is also sometimes referred to as vin blanc de macération .

Orange wine is now made in many countries around the world. Indeed, over the centuries, Greece, Romania, Slovenia and Italy have been inspired by Georgian winemakers and adopted their long maceration technique for white grapes. In France, the first orange wines were produced in the south of the country in the 1990s. Although still confidential, it is now produced in many regions, including Languedoc-Roussillon. The winemakers who create orange wines are generally followers ofa minimalist organic approach, seeking to limit the use of inputs as much as possible and to apply principles close to nature. Indeed, just like other types of wine, an orange wine can be produced using traditional, organic or biodynamic methods. The renaissance of orange wine goes hand in hand with the trend towards natural wines.

Orange Gold : organic orange wine by Gérard Bertrand

Orange gold

Passionate about terroirs and wines with character, Gérard Bertrand has given a new lease of life to orange wine with his cuvée Orange Gold. Inspired by the first Georgian orange wines, he has created anew profile for vin orange, emphasizing freshness and sublimating the terroir of southern France and its magnificent sunsets. Orange Gold is a delicate orange wine, labeled organic, with a brilliant golden color, bewitching freshness, delicate tannins and subtle natural acidity.

TastingOrange Gold is a real pleasure, with its striking freshness. Made froma blend of Chardonnay, Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Marsanne, Mauzac, Muscat and Clairette grapes, the bunches are carefully harvested by hand, then gently transported to the winery, without destemming or crushing. Semi-carbonic maceration follows, lasting 10 to 15 days, accompanied by light pumping-over. When the perfect balance between tannins and color is achieved, the grapes are devatted, pressed and the wine is blended in a stainless steel tank to complete fermentation.

After fermentation, the wine is transferred to barrels for further aging, revealing all its complexity. This crucial stage enables Orange Gold to develop rich aromas and a silky texture. Barrel ageing lends the wine subtle nuances of vanilla and oak, adding a further dimension to its aromatic palette.

The result is an orange wine of exceptional finesse, harmoniously blending the fruity freshness of the grapes with the depth of flavor conferred by barrel ageing. Orange Gold embodies the pure, authentic expression of the terroir of southern France, while offering a contemporary interpretation of the orange wine. Its delicacy and freshness make an ideal companion for a wide range of dishes, sublimating moments of conviviality and the pleasures of the table. The nose is complex, fragrant and very fresh, brimming with aromas of peach, apricot and mirabelle plum. The palate is round and suave, with a fine texture and precise, tasty flavors, a fine balance to which the tannins give body and spirit. An ideal wine to accompany Indian curry dishes, lightly spiced Asian cuisine or hard cheeses. To taste Orange Gold is to immerse yourself ina unique taste experience, where each sip reveals the passion and soul of the orange wines of yesteryear, reinvented for the pleasure of lovers of authentic, refined wines.

Orange wine, a versatile wine

Tasting an orange wine can be surprising, but it also opens the door to new tastes and pairings. Indeed, the tannic structure of orange wines makes them truly versatile. Withtheir broad aromatic expression, they can accompany an entire meal, from starter to dessert. On the palate, they combine the minerality of dry white wines with the power of a red wine. This makes orange wines easy to pair, even for novices. For serving temperature, enjoy them slightly warmer than white wines, around 12°, to preserve their freshness while allowing the wine to warm up in the glass. Orange wine has won over the palates of many wine lovers, so why not yours?
