The breathalyzer is not designed to measure the precise level of alcohol in the air, and therefore in the blood. Its purpose is to be used by the police or by the operator to determine whether or not the person is fit to drive.
If the test is positive, the police will use a breathalyser to measure the precise level of alcohol in the blood.
The breathalyzer is the only legal instrument for measuring the precise alcohol content of breath for the purposes of legal action. Used by law enforcement agencies, it must be reliable, accurate, comply with the AFNOR NF X 20 701 standard and be inspected once a year for the test to be valid.
There are 2 types ofbreathalyser. The chemical breathalyzer is similar to a balloon, and can only be used once.
The electronic breathalyzer can be of 2 classes.
This device is considered mandatory in all land motor vehicles by a decree published in the Journal Officiel on Thursday, March 1, 2012. However its non-possession is not sanctioned according to another decree published in the Journal Officiel on Friday March 1, 2013. It is nevertheless advisable to have at least 1 in the vehicle.
Road safety authorities consider that thechemical breathalyser or electronic is an excellent means of self-testing to find out whether or not it is safe to drive.
In addition, establishments open at night and authorized to serve alcohol between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. are now required to provide NF standard-certified breathalysers. Since July 1, 2015, the blood-alcohol limit is 0.2g/L of blood for young drivers on probation and less than 0.5g/L of blood for experienced drivers.
Before using a disposable ethylotest, it's important to remember that consuming 1 additional glass of alcohol will raise your blood alcohol level by around 0.25 g/L. Even so, the body's ability to assimilate alcohol molecules can be slow or rapid, depending on physical parameters. The rise in blood alcohol levels continues until around 60 minutes after the last drink has been consumed.
Most of the time, the effects of alcohol molecules have not really dissipated, despite popular belief: having a breathalyser will help you avoid irreparable damage.
The regulations for the alcohol level accepted have been voluntarily adjusted for young drivers to follow the measure hard July 1, 2015: they are the 1st cause of death and disability of 18 - 25 year olds and in ¼ of collisions the alcohol level is excessive.
