Demeter biodynamic wine from Gérard Bertrand estates

Demeter-certified biodynamic viticulture for a terroir wine closer to nature

biodynamic clos d'ora

While organic farming and its "AB" label are well known today, biodynamic wine and its "Demeter" label are much less so. And yet biodynamics is a farming method that takes the "all-natural" concept even further than organic.

This method of cultivation seeks symbiosis with nature. Man aims to reinforce organic life and exchanges between the soil and the cultivated plant, with the primary consequence of no longer needing to use chemical products to protect (pesticides) or nourish (fertilizers) it. With biodynamics, the winegrower cares for the vine, fortifies it and harvests its fruits, without exhausting it.

For Gérard Bertrand, a fervent defender of the environment, biodynamic viticulture is a veritable philosophy of life. In 2002, at Domaine de Cigalus that he converted his first vineyard to biodynamic viticulture. Convinced of the benefits of this close-to-nature cultivation method, he now applies biodynamic principles to all the vines on his estates in Languedoc-Roussillon, which today represent 950 hectares spread over the entire Occitanie region.

What is a biodynamic wine?

A biodynamic wine is a wine made according to the principles of biodynamic agriculture.

Biodynamics, or biodynamic agriculture, is a farming method that aims to regenerate and strengthen soil and plants, using natural preparations such as horn dung or organic compost. Biodynamics also takes into account the influence of the planets, in particular the lunar calendar. In biodynamic cultivation, all chemical and synthetic products are strictly forbidden. Only organic fertilizers are used. What's more, unlike traditional and organic wines, biodynamic wines receive very few oenological inputs during the vinification phase.

Biodynamic wines, ambassadors for terroir wines

Gérard Bertrand, as an unconditional lover of the terroirs of southern France, particularly those of Languedoc-Roussillon, creates high-quality biodynamic wines with a strong identity at each of his estates. This is particularly true of Domaine de l'Hospitalet, which produces Château l'Hospitalet La Clape Grand Vin Rouge, voted the world's best red wine by IWC in 2019. Indeed, biodynamic viticulture, which focuses on the plant rather than productivity, enables the grapes to draw their resources directly from the terroir and the different layers of the soil.

The grape is no longer infused with chemical fertilizers to develop it artificially. Thanks to the rich organic life of the soil, the vine is nourished by the living humus of its terroir. With its benefits, the grape develops optimally, concentrating sugar, trace elements and vitamins. The wine produced from these grapes perfectly expresses its origins, its terroir and its history.

Biodynamic viticulture produces deep, powerful wines that are fruitier and more balanced than traditional wines. Biodynamically cultivated vines enable the wine to express the full potential of its terroir, with all its distinctive qualities and characteristics.

The Demeter label

Today, while many winegrowers claim to practice biodynamic viticulture, the Demeter label is the only way to certify compliance with strict, totally transparent specifications. Present in 53 countries, the Demeter label is based on the specifications of the Organic label, but adds more stringent measures, particularly with regard to inputs, in order to respect the principles of biodynamic viticulture. Of course, in biodynamic farming, chemical pesticides and fertilizers are strictly forbidden.

With an even more ecological vision, Demeter biodynamic wines de facto respect the specifications of organic agriculture. They therefore also carry the "AB" organic label.

However, while today's organic label assures consumers that they are dealing with a wine that has not used chemicals (fertilizers, pesticides), many so-called "industrial" practices are still authorized in the making of an organic wine, and do not allow the wine to express its full potential.

Biodynamic agriculture, through the Demeter label, represents a higher level of respect for a more natural, artisanal production process. This is particularly the case for Clos d'Ora (organic and Demeter red wine), and Clos du Temple (organic rosé and demeter), two biodynamically cultivated estates producing exceptional wine and using animal traction (a mule) to work the soil.

Biodynamics

The qualities of a biodynamic wine

Produced from vines grown using natural methods, without the use of synthetic products, biodynamic wines offer a rich, delicate palette of flavors. Whereas a traditional wine has only two or three predominant aromas, a biodynamic wine is much more complex, expressing a multitude of flavors and aromas.

The wine is delicate on the nose, silky on the palate, with the emphasis on fruit. More mineral and balanced, the biodynamic wine represents the culmination of the work of vines cultivated with love and patience.

With a biodynamic Demeter wine, digestibility is also significantly improved, thanks in particular to its very low sulfite content. The sulfite content of a biodynamic wine is atleast 30% lowerthan that of an organic wine

People with digestive difficulties will find a wine more easily assimilated by the body.
