France is one of the world's leading producers of white wine. In all regions where red wine is grown, white wine is too. Some regions have even made it their specialty, such as the Languedoc region's famous Picpoul de Pinet, with its large, elongated bottle.
White wine is produced from a number of grape varieties, including the best-known Chardonnay, Sauvignon and Grenache Blanc. Other varieties grown in Languedoc include Bourboulenc, Roussanne, Marsanne, Vermentino (Rolle) and Gewürztraminer.
Each grape variety, skilfully chosen and blended, creates the uniqueness of each white wine. White wine is generally made from white-skinned grapes, which explains its distinctive color.

Some like it fruity and syrupy, others more dry and mineral. One thing's for sure, there are as many possible combinations as there are wines.
However, some white wines stand out from the rest for their quality and rich aromatic palette. These good white wines are often biodynamically and/or organically grown, and their products are purer and better structured, revealing the full richness of the fruit. In France, the Languedoc region offers some excellent white wines, blended with lesser-known but equally interesting grape varieties such as viognier, vermentino and roussanne.
