What is a good rosé wine?

Rosé wine, the summer drink of the South of France

Formerly known as vinum clarum and then clairet, rosé wine is the oldest of all wines. Indeed, the cultivation of vines, and consequently the production of wine, first appeared in ancient times in the south of France, where the Greeks had settled. It is therefore not surprising that our country is today the world's leading producer of rosé wine.

Fresh, fruity, light… Rosé wine is the true star of summer, but it is often wrongly considered a simple “summer thirst-quenching wine.” However, this is not the case… We cannot repeat it enough: rosé wine is not a blend of red and white wine.

Made mainly from black grape varieties (the same as for red wine: Syrah, Grenache, Pinot Noir, Gamay, etc.), rosé wine is the result of a specific winemaking process (by direct pressing, maceration or bleeding) which gives it a color with more or less intense nuances. For example, direct-pressed rosé wines are characterized by a light color, while saignée rosé wines are denser and deeper. There is therefore a wide variety of rosé wines !

How to taste a good rosé wine

How to taste a good rosé wine

Often tasted in aperitif , rosé wine also goes wonderfully with spring and summer meals based on grilled white meats and fish, sun-drenched vegetables and others mixed salads . It should be served chilled, between 10 and 12 degrees, like a white wine, to maintain the richness of its aromatic palette.

While Provence is inseparably linked to rosé wine, other French wine regions are also making their mark with the production of more elegant and complex rosé wines. Among them are the rosé wines of Languedoc-Roussillon. Labeled AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) or AOP (Appellation d'Origine Protégée), they are spearheading the rosé wine revival in France. These Languedoc appellation rosés are generally distinguished by a vibrant color and strong floral and red fruit notes. Gérard Bertrand offers a wide range of rosé wines ideal to discover them… or rediscover them!

If you are still hesitant, know that the region Languedoc-Roussillon was the most awarded during the last edition of the Brussels World Competition in the rosé wine category!
